💡 What is Force?

A force is a push or a pull.

A force can change, or try to change, an object's state of rest, speed, direction, shape or size.

Five Important Effects of Force

1. Start Motion

Kicking a stationary football makes it move.

Applying bicycle brakes can stop a moving bicycle.

3. Change Speed

Pedalling harder can make a bicycle move faster.

These forces act only when objects touch each other.

Muscular force Frictional force Mechanical force

Examples: pushing a trolley, pulling a rope, writing with a pencil and using brakes.

These forces can act even when objects do not touch.

Gravitational force Magnetic force Electrostatic force

Examples: a falling apple, a magnet attracting iron pins and a rubbed comb attracting paper bits.

⚖️ Balanced and Unbalanced Forces

Balanced Forces

Equal forces act in opposite directions. The overall force is zero, so there is no change in the object's motion.

Example: A book resting on a table.

Unbalanced Forces

The forces are not equal. The overall force is not zero, so the object's motion can change.

Example: One team pulling harder in tug-of-war.

Quick clue: Equal and opposite forces balance. A stronger force in one direction produces an unbalanced force.

Friction Can Cause Problems

  • Produces heat
  • Wears out moving parts
  • Slows objects down

Simulation 1: How far will the ball move?

Choose the amount of force. Watch the ball move. This is a simple visual model, not an exact scientific measurement.

A small push changes the ball's motion, but it travels a shorter distance in this model.
A medium push gives the ball a bigger change in motion.
A stronger push gives the ball the greatest change in motion in this model.

Simulation 2: Friction Race

Give the toy car the same push on three surfaces. Which surface lets it travel farther?

Rough surfaces usually produce more friction, so the car stops sooner.
A smooth floor has less friction than rough carpet, so the car moves farther.
A very slippery surface provides very little friction, so the car travels farthest in this model.

Simulation 3: Balanced or Unbalanced?

Choose the force situation and observe the box.

BOX
The equal opposite forces balance, so the box does not move to either side.
The force towards the right is stronger, so the forces are unbalanced and the box moves right.
The force towards the left is stronger, so the forces are unbalanced and the box moves left.

🧪 Try This Safe Home Activity

Paper, Cloth and Smooth Table Friction Test

You need: a toy car or eraser, a sheet of paper, a piece of cloth and a smooth table.

  1. Give the object a gentle push on the smooth table.
  2. Repeat with paper under it.
  3. Repeat with cloth under it.
  4. Observe where the object travels farthest and shortest.
  5. Explain the result using friction.

Expected idea: A rougher surface usually creates more friction and stops the object sooner.

Mass tells us how much matter an object contains. It is commonly measured in kilograms (kg).

Weight

Weight is the gravitational force acting on an object. Force is measured in newtons (N).
