🌈 1. What Is a Physical Quantity?

Anything that can be measured and written using a number and a unit is called a physical quantity.

Physical quantity = Numerical value + Unit Example: The length of a notebook is 24 cm.
Measurement = Numerical Value × Unit

Numerical Value

It tells us how many times the chosen unit is contained in the quantity. In 5 m, the numerical value is 5.

Unit-writing rules: Write a space between the number and unit, do not add a full stop after a symbol, and do not make unit symbols plural. Write 5 kg, not 5 kgs.
Quick conversion ladder

km → m: multiply by 1000

m → cm: multiply by 100

cm → mm: multiply by 10

Moving in the reverse direction means dividing by the same factor.

A correct unit is important, but good technique is equally important.

Avoid Parallax Error

Keep your eye vertically above the mark being read. Looking from the side can produce a wrong reading.

Check the Zero Mark

Place one end of the object at the zero mark. If the zero edge is damaged, begin at another mark and subtract the initial reading.

Know the Least Count

The least count is the smallest value an instrument can measure. A typical ruler with millimetre divisions has a least count of 1 mm.

Read the Meniscus

For water in a measuring cylinder, keep your eye level with the surface and read the bottom of the curved meniscus.

How to Measure a Straight Length

Choose a ruler or scale of suitable range and least count.
Place the scale along the object without tilting it.
Align one end with the zero mark.
Read the other end with your eye directly above it.
Record the value with its correct unit.

How to Measure a Curved Line

Place a thread carefully along the curved line. Mark the thread at the two ends, straighten it, and measure the marked length with a ruler.

Mass and weight are not exactly the same

Mass tells us how much matter an object contains and is measured in kilograms. Weight is the force with which gravity pulls the object. In everyday speech, people often say “weight” when they are referring to mass.

Follow the units carefully at every step.

Example 1: Convert 3.5 m into cm

1 m = 100 cm

3.5 m = 3.5 × 100 cm = 350 cm

Example 2: Find the area of a notebook cover

Length = 24 cm, breadth = 18 cm

Area = length × breadth = 24 × 18 = 432 cm^2

Example 3: Find the volume of a cuboid

Length = 8 cm, breadth = 5 cm, height = 3 cm

Volume = 8 × 5 × 3 = 120 cm^3

Example 4: Find the volume of a stone by displacement

Initial water level = 50 mL, final level = 78 mL

Volume of stone = 78 − 50 = 28 mL = 28 cm^3
